The approaching El Niño phenomenon could bring hotter and drier weather conditions to Malaysia through early 2027, raising risks of water shortages, forest and peatland fires, and haze episodes, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Citing forecasts from MET Malaysia, Zahid said El Niño is expected to influence the country’s weather in the coming months, resulting in below-normal rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon period.
As chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee, he urged Malaysians to conserve water, avoid open burning and stay updated on weather developments through the myCuaca application and official MET Malaysia channels.
“Early preparation and responsible action from all parties are crucial to minimise risks and ensure public well-being,” he said in a Facebook post.
Zahid said the government would continue monitoring the situation and take the necessary measures to safeguard public safety and welfare
